The Spark: Protecting Those Who Speak Truth to Power
Every great technology has its origin story — often starting in one place and veering into unexpected, exciting directions. This is the tale of how a small team's quest to protect free speech evolved into a powerful, secure file synchronization platform trusted by those who handle the world's most valuable digital assets.
Back in the early 2010s, I was part of a small team of programmers working on an ambitious project: a truly secure, decentralized instant messenger called TrueLink (true.im).
The idea was born from real, urgent needs. A journalist friend in Paris shared alarming stories — many of his colleagues were afraid to communicate openly online. The French government was reportedly spying on journalists, creating a climate of fear. Traditional tools like Skype had become compromised, with Microsoft routing traffic through their servers and acquiring capabilities that raised serious privacy concerns. Other messengers like ICQ, GTalk, or even Jabber with encryption plugins were either insecure or too cumbersome.
TrueLink was built differently. It used NSA Suite B cryptography (AES, ECDSA, ECDH, SHA2) — government-level security — and was fully decentralized. Its transport layer ensured guaranteed delivery, making it resilient even if governments tried to shut down the internet (users could fallback to SMS or other mediums).
We open-sourced the project, hoping the community would help build a tool that journalists, activists, and privacy-conscious users worldwide could trust: https://github.com/TrueLink/TrueLink.
The Hollywood Pivot: Securing Blockbuster Secrets
As often happens in startups, the technology found a life of its own. Word spread in unexpected circles. Soon, a major Hollywood movie production company approached us. They weren't worried about government surveillance — they were terrified of intellectual property theft.
Before a big film release, studios live in constant fear of leaks that could cost tens or hundreds of millions. They needed a rock-solid way to store and share sensitive production files (scripts, footage, VFX assets) securely across teams. TrueLink's encrypted, decentralized architecture proved perfect for the job.
This pivot showed us something important: the core technology — secure, efficient, resilient data transfer and storage — had applications far beyond messaging. It was about protecting high-value digital assets wherever trust was paramount.
The Birth of LightUp.Cloud: Efficient Synchronization at Scale
From these experiences emerged LightUp.Cloud — a powerful solution for synchronizing large files efficiently and securely.
Whether it's film studios guarding unreleased masterpieces, enterprises handling sensitive data, or teams collaborating across borders, LightUp.Cloud delivers fast, reliable, on-premise-friendly synchronization with military-grade encryption. It combines the lessons from TrueLink's decentralized roots with modern cloud capabilities, creating a tool that "lights up" productivity while keeping data truly protected.
Today, we continue developing both the open-source foundations and the enterprise-grade LightUp.Cloud platform, always guided by the original mission: build technology that empowers people and organizations to communicate and collaborate without fear.
The journey from Parisian newsrooms to Hollywood vaults taught us that the best innovations often find their true calling in surprising places. We're excited to see where the light leads next.
