Grant from the Ukrainian Startup Fund: What We Learned at USMAC Accelerator

In early 2021, thanks to a grant from the Ukrainian Startup Fund (USF), we had the opportunity to participate in the prestigious USMAC Accelerator program in Silicon Valley. While many startups chase grants mainly for funding, the real value for us came from the intensive workshops and direct insights from seasoned entrepreneurs and investors.

Celebrating the journey

Key Takeaways from the Program

1. The Entrepreneur’s Journey & Scale-Up Realities

Chris Burry and Alfredo Coppola (Co-CEOs of USMAC) opened the program with a sobering look at the startup path. Reaching “Product/Market Fit” is just the beginning — the real challenges begin at the scaling stage. The presentations highlighted how many promising companies self-destruct during growth, often due to losing customer focus.

2. Inside the Head of Successful Entrepreneurs

A standout session explored the mindset that separates successful founders: resilience, trust in others, embracing diversity, belief in self, and willingness to collaborate. These aren’t just feel-good traits — they are practical tools for navigating high-pressure environments and building strong teams.

3. Becoming Customer Centric: Value Chains

One of the most valuable modules focused on understanding your customer’s value chain. Using the famous Corning Gorilla Glass story as a case study, we learned that even revolutionary technology can fail if it doesn’t solve a real, painful problem for the customer. Corning’s Chemcor glass was technically superior but rejected by the auto industry because it was “too good” and too expensive. Only when Steve Jobs needed scratch-resistant glass for the iPhone did the technology find its perfect market fit.

The lesson: Your product is not the center of the universe. You must deeply understand how your customers create value for their own customers and where existing solutions fall short.

How This Shapes LightUp.Cloud

These insights reinforced our belief that technology alone is not enough. For LightUp.Cloud to succeed, we must remain obsessively customer-centric — focusing on the real pain points of teams handling large files, sensitive data, and complex collaboration workflows. We continue refining our platform not just for technical excellence, but to fit naturally into our users’ value creation processes.

We are deeply grateful to the Ukrainian Startup Fund for making this experience possible. The combination of grant support and high-quality mentorship helped us gain clarity on market needs and strategic direction. We remain committed to building a product that truly serves our users — with control, performance, and simplicity at its core.
